Oh, taste & see that the Lord is good? Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!

Psalm 34:8

Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever!

Psalm 136:1

Catch phrase

We can say God is good all we want, but do we actually understand it?

As Christians, we mindlessly quote this like a phrase for a bumper sticker while we allow our life experiences to warp or change what that means.

To find the truth, we have to lay aside opinions & even experiences and go straight to the Word.

Before we read this, I want to clarify the point is to see what God sees as good here, not to get wrapped up in the requirements. Jesus fulfilled all requirements on our behalf. Thank You, Jesus!

Dueteronomy 28:2-13

And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God:

“Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the country.

“Blessed shall be the [a]fruit of your body, the produce of your ground and the increase of your herds, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks.

“Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.

“Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.

“The Lord will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before your face; they shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways.

“The Lord will command the blessing on you in your storehouses and in all to which you set your hand, and He will bless you in the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

“The Lord will establish you as a holy people to Himself, just as He has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the Lord your God and walk in His ways.

10 Then all peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they shall be afraid of you.

11 And the Lord will grant you plenty of goods, in the fruit of your body, in the increase of your livestock, and in the produce of your ground, in the land of which the Lord swore to your fathers to give you.

12 The Lord will open to you His good treasure, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season, and to bless all the work of your hand. You shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow.

13 And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail; you shall be above only, and not be beneath, if you heed the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, and are careful to observe them.

God’s desire

This list has the blessings the “good” things God wants to do for His people.

Jeremiah 29:11 says – “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

And just for those of you who think He was talking to people who had it all together, you would be mistaken. God was talking to people who were actively rebelling. And He is speaking this to you now whether or not you are doing it all right or not. It’s not based on your performance but on who God is. God is good, and He is love.

Romans 5:8 reveals that “God demonstrates His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

In the old testament, the Israelites were graded on a performance-based system, as we will see more in this next passage of Deuteronomy.

We are now graded on a grace system, which we will discuss in another lesson.

Deuteronomy 28:15-19

Now let’s review the curses…

But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:

Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field.

Cursed shall be thy basket and thy store.

Cursed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy land, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep.

Cursed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and cursed shalt thou be when thou goest out.

These are things God clearly outlines as bad. If things aren’t working out for you, whether you are in the marketplace or growing crops, it’s not a good thing.

This sounds fundamental to us because God has already wired us with an intuitive understanding of right and wrong.

Even an unbeliever has this God-given sense of right and wrong, but religion comes along and mixes things up, blurs the lines, and makes what was so simple before become a confusing mess. They do it by picking scriptures out of context and using them to say what they want them to say, for example…

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Isaiah 55:8-9

twisted truth

These verses are absolutely true; if you think about what’s usually going through your mind, it’s nothing like what’s going through His mind. Psalms says God’s thoughts of us outnumber the grains of sand. We never think about others that much. Our minds are mostly self-focused.

Religion takes this verse and says no one can understand God. This takes the responsibility off us to search Him out and is entirely false. Why did God give us the Bible? Because God is El Emet, “the Faithful God of truth,”

“if any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”

James 1:5

God wants to make Himself known to you. He is not far away. He is close, very close.

Now let’s look back over the curses. We aren’t going to go through all of them. There are three times more curses than blessings, so let’s get the essence right now. You may be wondering why there are so many. With our new covenant, we are redeemed from the curse, as stated in Galatians 3:13

“Christ redeemed us from the law’s curse by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.”

– Galatians 3:13

This is no longer a list of punishments but a list of things we are free from in Christ Jesus.

There is so much in here, like verse 18 talks about birth defects, & infertility. Verse 20 confusion and unproductivity. 21 and 22 covers disease, rash, seizures, and people chasing after you—67 fear anxiety and depression.

Now you might be asking… How can I be free from all of these things? I still struggle with fear, anxiety, and depression.

Key of Salvation

Well, if you are saved and are still experiencing the curses, then you are like someone who has been locked up for a very long time, so long you don’t know anything beyond prison life, then someone comes along and tells you about the goodness and love of God then they offered you a key called salvation. They told you this key would wash away all your sins and let you into heaven. You look at the key, your heart aching for it but knowing you had no means to purchase it, you start getting angry at the messenger for even offering. Bringing the key closer, he continued,” and God wants to give this to you as a gift. His Son already paid the price in full. There is a pause as you try to grasp what you heard. Finally, he brings you back with the words “just receive.” You look him in the eye and say, “yes, please, I want this key!” He leads you through prayer, reaches into your jail cell through the bars, and drops the key into your hands. Concluding with a quick blessing, this messenger turns on his heels and leaves you in the cell. Every day, you still sleep on the cold floor, and you can’t see the sun or stars; getting along with the bare minimum, you take comfort; these pains are for a season. As time goes on, you get tired of suffering, tired of living, living in the dark, chained and scared.

People visit and tell you, “God is good, and the suffering is good. We may not understand how but He is working it for good. So be a good soldier and show the world how much you can suffer for Christ and still believe.”

This is the picture of so many Christians today. They are saved and stuck. The messenger neglected to share that the key of salvation isn’t just a ticket to heaven. It’s much more than fire insurance.

Seven Attributes

There are two greek words used when referring to salvation: Sozo and Soteria. There are seven attributes connected to these words; seven attributes of salvation.

One: Saved.

YOu are saved from the law, from sin, and from hell.

Two: Healed.

Three: Delivered.

You are free from the hold of sin and bondage of any kind. That means anything that makes you feel trapped and imprisoned, whether it be abuse, substance abuse, addiction, fear, anxiety, depression, evil thoughts, whatever is going on around you, or even bad behaviors you can’t seem to break, you can be delivered of that because it’s already provided in your key of salvation.

Four: Preserved.

Another way to say that it is sealed like in Ephesians 4:30.

And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. – Eph 4:30

Five: Protection/

YOu have divine protection. It says in Isaiah “no weapon formed against you shall prosper,” and in Luke 10:19, “nothing will by any means hurt you.” You have God’s protection. Love protects, God is love, and perfect love casts out fear.

Six: To do well.

Increase – to make prosperous.

Seven: To make whole.

God is a restoration God (Shalom): nothing missing, nothing lacking.

And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass that, as they went, they were cleansed.

And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice, glorified God,

And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.

And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine?

There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.

And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.- Luke 17:14-19

Healing stops what’s happening in your body, but your body is still damaged. Wholeness is a full restoration.

God is good, and He wants you to be blessed and not cursed. He laid out good and bad in Deuteronomy 28, and in Deuteronomy 30:19, He says, “This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life so that you and your children may live.

The definition of blessed is – to cause to prosper, to make happy.

He wants you to be happy and prosperous.

The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life and life abundantly.

John 10:10

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

James 1:17

Before ending this lesson, I want to highlight something back in Deuteronomy 28:10

“And all people of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the Lord; and they shall be afraid of you.”

Deuteronomy 28:10

This is a reverent fear, respect, awe, and admiration. The whole world will see that you are God’s because of the blessings. You aren’t just blessed. You’re overflowing with life in abundance.

For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through Him, the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.

2 Corinthians 1:20

Glory to God

God gets glory when we live in the blessings and promises He provided for us.

The people who experience tragedy and blame God for it say, “God must have a reason. His ways are higher than our ways, and His thoughts are above our thoughts. He is working all things for good.”

These people are misappropriating scripture and don’t understand the goodness of God. Anything that has to do with stealing, killing, and destroying is from the enemy.

Many people commonly believe that since God knows the end from the beginning, He also controls everything in between. Since God is all-knowing and all-powerful, only what He wills can happen on the earth. This teaching blames God for all the evil happening on earth. After all, nothing can happen outside of His will.

This false teaching often called the “sovereignty of God,” is messed up on many levels. If you want to learn the scripture behind why this teaching is evil and deteriorates God’s reputation, Here’s a link to a teaching on it.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

1 Peter 2:9

For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give favor and glory, for no good thing will He withhold from the one who walks uprightly.

Psalm 84:11

So if you are the person with the key of salvation but are in that jail cell, I’m here to tell you that key works on that door and every door that tries to keep you from the freedom God has given, don’t know it, so your problem is a knowledge problem, and understanding the truth of spirit, soul, and body will help you tremendously!

Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
